Week 3 Update

Progress is definitely moving forward in the design of this house. This past week, lots of work has been done developing the best envelope and fenestration, as well as solar power production. Imisi has been taking the lead on the envelope and fenestration, working on calculations for the U values and determining the efficiency. Dan and Lars have been spearheading the solar panels and working to figure out the best arrangements. The entire roof was changed so that the angle of the roof could match the latitude of Philadelphia, making it the most efficient angle for solar power production. With the roof completely covered in solar panels, almost 39,000 kWh are produced per year! Some panels will be removed as we find our yearly energy usage numbers. Imisi has been doing a great job working on the envelope and fenestration. She has been researching different types of insulation, as well as the sheeting and the cavity. She has been running the numbers to get the U-Value for the home.

Week 6 Update

Things are going well for our sustainable house. We are still working on electrical and heat loads, and some more confirming R-values and such, but these things are just about finalized and should be complete soon. We have started working on the Final Report Draft, which will be finished next week.

Week 5 Update

There has been a great deal of work done this week. There has been a lot of focus on the various loads that will be on the house. Lars has been working on the heating load with Rediet. Lars has been looking at the energy needed to heat the home, while Rediet has been focusing on the heating produced by people and the like. Imisi has been working on the final touches for the envelope, while Dan has been working on water consumption calculations and the system itself. The progress is looking great; the house is really coming together!

Week 4 Update

This past week has involved a lot of calculations by everyone on the team. Imisi has finalized the envelope and the envelope calculations, with a final U-value of 11.5, which should be sufficient for the heating and cooling of the home efficiently. Rediet has been chugging along with the internal load, focusing right now on the electrical load. She is determining all the appliances used in the home, and how much energy will be used a day by deciding how long a day will people be in the home. Dan has been working on the grey water system schematics, trying to figure out how that system will work and be efficient. Lars has been looking into the heating load of the house to help decide what geothermal system will be used in the house.
